Under general supervision, the Counselor provides comprehensive academic, personal, and mental health counseling services to enrolled students to support their well-being, persistence, and success. This position offers individual and crisis counseling, connects students with campus and community resources, and assists with financial, personal, and social challenges that may impact academic progress. The Counselor serves as a student advocate, including acting as the Title IX Respondent Advocate, and collaborates with faculty, staff, and external partners to coordinate supportive services. The role also contributes to campus education and awareness initiatives related to mental health and personal development, helps coordinate student support programs such as the food pantry, and participates in college committees, outreach, and departmental planning to advance a student-centered campus environment.



What You'll Do

  • Provides academic, personal, and mental health counseling services to enrolled students; contacts Mobile Crisis and/or Campus Police when necessary for additional assistance.
  • Assists with developing partnerships with organizations in the community and refers students to these organizations for additional support as needed.
  • Speaks to students with financial insecurities regarding grants and other programs that offer financial assistance such as the PCC Foundation, and other departments or agencies on and off campus.
  • Provides advocacy and counseling services to respondents enrolled at PCC that are involved in a Title IX investigation; Serves as the Title IX Respondent Advocate.
  • Assists with the coordination of efforts to bring education and awareness to campus on topics related to personal counseling issues, mental health issues, and resources for women, men, and other groups through printed materials, newsletters, events and programs.
  • Assists with the coordination of the food pantry and assists in efforts to partner with groups on or off campus interested in making donations or contributions.
  • Resolves student complaints and trouble-shoots/problem-solves for Counseling Services.
  • Communicates with staff and faculty to gain overall awareness of curriculum information, policy and protocol of PCC as a college and of individual departments.
  • Represents PCC at various speaking/networking events; responds to complaints or problems in Counseling Services; participates in department planning; serves on campus committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counselor Education or related
  • At least three (3) years previous experience with individual/group counseling, crisis counseling/intervention, and academic support services

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous counseling experience higher education setting

Additional Information

Work Environment: Generally a quiet and private environment designed to support confidential conversations and student support activities. The role requires frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Work may also occur in classrooms, meeting rooms, or campus event spaces when providing presentations, workshops, or outreach programs. Occasional travel across campus or within the local community may be required to attend meetings, training, or partner events. The position may involve responding to urgent or crisis situations, which can create periods of increased emotional demand and require coordination with Campus Police, Mobile Crisis, or other emergency services.

Physical Demands: Physical requirements of this position are considered light and are typical of a professional office environment. Duties primarily involve sitting, speaking, and listening for extended periods while providing counseling services and conducting meetings. The position requires frequent use of a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment. The Counselor must be able to occasionally stand, walk across campus, bend, reach, and lift or carry items such as files, outreach materials, or program supplies weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.


Normal Working Hours: Standard schedule, Monday – Friday; Maintains a consistent on-campus presence to provide direct services to students. Occasional evening or extended hours may be required to accommodate student needs, participate in campus events, conduct workshops, attend committee meetings, or respond to urgent or crisis situations. The work schedule may be adjusted periodically to support peak advising, registration, or student support periods.
