Job Summary

The Exceptional Children (OCS) Teacher in Pitt County Schools is responsible for delivering specially designed instruction aligned to the North Carolina Occupational Course of Study (OCS) for students with disabilities. This role focuses on preparing students for competitive employment, post-secondary education/training, and independent living. The teacher will implement individualized instruction, support transition planning, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations while fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Learning

  • Plan and deliver standards-based instruction aligned to the NC OCS curriculum
  • Provide explicit instruction in academics, employability skills, and independent living skills
  • Differentiate instruction to meet Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and student needs
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and high-yield instructional strategies to improve student outcomes
  • Implement community-based instruction (CBI) to promote real-world application of skills

IEP Development & Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in accordance with IDEA and North Carolina policies
  • Maintain accurate EC documentation, including progress reports, service logs, and reevaluation data
  • Collect and analyze student data to drive instructional decisions and measure growth
  • Facilitate IEP meetings and collaborate with families and multidisciplinary teams

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, EC staff, counselors, and school leadership
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and school improvement efforts
  • Support school-wide initiatives that promote equity, access, and student achievement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field
  • Valid North Carolina Exceptional Children (EC) teaching license (or eligibility)
  • Knowledge of the NC Occupational Course of Study (OCS)
  • Strong understanding of IDEA and EC compliance requirements
