Orthopaedics East & Sports Medicine Center is Eastern North Carolina’s premier orthopedic specialty practice, headquartered in Greenville. Our orthopedic surgeons — most of whom are fellowship-trained — along with our physician assistants, physical therapists, and occupational therapists, provide a variety of general and specialized operative and non-operative orthopedic services to meet the musculoskeletal needs of patients across Eastern North Carolina. Services include joint replacement, sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics, worker’s compensation care, fracture care, regenerative medicine, bracing and casting, physical therapy, and on-site X-ray and MRI imaging. We have served as the preferred providers of orthopedic care for East Carolina University Athletics for more than 30 years.

Responsible for assisting MD/PA with patient care, clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks in a professional and efficient manner to provide optimal patient care in accordance with the Practice’s core values of Excellence, Innovation, Collaboration, Advancement, Stewardship, and Patient Centered Care.
This position requires compliance with OrthoEast’s compliance standards, including its Code of Conduct, Compliance Program, and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element required as part of the Certified Medical Assistant’s job duties and is considered during performance evaluations.

Employment begins with a 90-day probationary period, during which performance, attendance, and suitability for the position are evaluated. Completion of the probationary period does not change the at-will nature of employment, which may be ended by either the employee or the Practice at any time, with or without cause or notice.

- Gathers and documents patient information regarding reason for visit and any pertinent data for the orthopaedic visit.
- Controls patient flow for MD/PA, including escorting patients to the appropriate areas such as the exam room, x-ray, x-ray waiting, and/or cast room.
- Ensures the patient is prepared and properly positioned for exam, and that supplies are in the room before the MD/PA arrives.
- Obtains x-rays, notes, and reports for the visit, and orders appropriate x-rays as prescribed by MD/PA.
- Provides direct patient care for dressing changes, suture removal, and splint and cast removal as directed.
- Assists MD/PA with procedures, including injections, dressing changes, pin removal, reductions, and minor surgeries.
- Completes pre-op paperwork and packets, and schedules referrals and diagnostic testing as directed by the provider.
- Obtains test results and notifies patients of results under provider direction.
- Performs instrument maintenance and autoclaving procedures per protocol.
- Documents in the chart all transactions that take place between clinical staff and the patient and/or family members.
- Manages message boxes to ensure medication questions and patient questions are answered the same day.
- Stocks and cleans rooms as necessary and complies with OSHA and safety guidelines in the policy and procedures manuals for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.
- Maintains professional relationships with MD/PA and other team members, in written and oral communications.
- Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment
This is an in-person role at the Practice’s Greenville, North Carolina clinic. Work is performed in a very busy outpatient orthopedic and surgical clinic, assisting physicians and physician assistants with direct patient care and supporting clinical, clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. The role involves frequent contact with a diverse patient population, often concerning stressful and/or emotional situations.

Education and Experience

Required:
- Successful completion of a post-secondary medical assisting program with current certification from one of the following agencies: the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA-CMA); the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP); the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), CMA designation; the American Medical Technologists (AMT), Registered designation; or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), NCMA designation — OR EMT Certification with experience.
- CPR certification.
- Nursing skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and condition of the patient.
- Basic computer skills.
- Experience in maintaining confidentiality in dealing with sensitive issues.
- Proven ability in making sound and accurate judgments in problem solving work issues.
- Successful record of follow through on commitments and demonstrated dependability.
Preferred:
- One year of experience with EMR systems.
