Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Interpreter Services, the Translator / Interpreter provides accurate and professional language interpretation and translation services to ECU Health patients, families, team members, and the community. This includes video remote interpretation and telephonic communication at all ECU Health locations. Primary responsibility is to provide written and digital translations of various documents. Examples of documents to be translated include complex technical reports from foreign health care providers, patient care information, consent forms, vital and non-vital documents, MyChart messages, patient education materials, marketing and communications, and correspondence between physicians and patients. This position provides oral and video remote interpretation. The position also serves as a resource to patients, families, and staff connecting them with the appropriate resources for Limited English Proficient patients & families. In addition, the remote translator/interpreter is responsible for updating and reviewing style guides and terminology banks and becoming a champion and trainer in machine-assisted translation. Follow ethical principles, including accepted interpreter and translator codes of ethics and standards of practice. Interpret messages appropriately into target and source languages, maintaining and mediating message content, context, and style by professional standards. Identify and resolve conflicts related to the meanings of words, concepts, practices, values, or behaviors. Act as a clarifier and a culture broker within encounters, as appropriate. Advocate for LEP patients and families. Assist them in navigating the healthcare system. Compile and consult reference materials (such as dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, and computerized terminology banks) to ensure interpretation and translation accuracy. Compile terminology and information to be used in interpretations and translations.

Responsibilities

Translator - Spanish


Translators convey meaning in written text from one language into another, with the benefit of research tools and time to review their product. They must communicate the text's style, tone, and intent, considering the message's target audience and the context in which the translated text will be presented (e.g., a sign, a letter, or a flier).

Translation: Read and comprehend the source language in enough depth to understand all the nuances of the message. Write with a native and professional command of the target language to communicate the nuances of the source message to a speaker of the target language. Choose the equivalent expression that conveys, as closely as possible, the meaning of the source language message (congruity judgment).

Localization: since there are often cultural or other differences between the audiences of the source and target texts, an effective translation may involve localization or minor adjustments to adapt to the target audience.

The translator performs the transcreation of advertising and marketing texts.

Manage translation projects and update project tracking tools.

To complete work, communicate with vendors or suppliers for outsourced translation or other formatting needs.

Use technology, computers, and computer systems (including hardware and software) to enter and process data. Achieve proficiency in communication technology devices and tools, including basic team member training and troubleshooting.

Champion and train others on using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. Update the translation memory database and terminology banks and share information with the team.

Post editing of machine translation (PEMT), trained in the review of MT, with the source document at hand.

If there is any ambiguity or unclear meaning, translators request clarification from those who ordered the translation to ensure that the underlying meaning of the source text is transferred accurately into the target language. This is particularly important in legal copy, operation manuals, taglines, signs, etc.

Correct and review texts from other members of the translation workgroup.



Interpretation


Convey meaning accurately and completely between and among patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) or other communication barriers, their families, and team members by video or audio remote interpretation.

Monitor patient, family, and team member comprehension of information, events, and the environment. Detect problems or changes in circumstances or events.

Identify and gather healthcare and situational background information or resources relevant to each encounter. Be knowledgeable of appropriate sources of information.

Establish expertise in the eyes of the patient and all team members, and confidently project information.

Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and all team members (by telephone, chat, video, written form, email, fax).

Communicate directly with people outside the organization, representing the organization to patients and families, the public, and other external parties (in person, in writing, or by telephone or email). Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.

Demonstrate the capacity to think critically under pressure. Prioritize and accomplish work.

Think creatively to ensure positive patient outcomes. Make decisions and solve problems related to patient care as they arise.

Continuously improve the knowledge base of relevant subject matters and interpreting skills, and apply new knowledge and skills to the job.

Handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts as much as possible. Request assistance when needed.

Use technology, computers and computer systems (including hardware and software), and telephones. Enter data or process information. Achieve proficiency in using communication technology devices and tools, including basic team member training and troubleshooting.

Document interventions in the electronic health record.

Project empathy and compassion to patients, families, and all team members.

Treat patients, families, and team members with respect, dignity, patience, tolerance, friendliness, and courtesy.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree or higher in healthcare, management, human services, translation, languages, or relevant field.

ATA certification

Completing a 40-hour medical interpretation program such as Bridging the Gap or ALTA language services.

Four or more years of healthcare interpreting experience.

Two or more years of translation experience.

Demonstrated language proficiency in speaking and listening in primary and secondary languages. Proficiency must be equivalent to Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) skill level 3+ or higher.

Demonstrated reading and writing proficiency in primary and secondary languages. Proficiency must be equivalent to Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) skill level 4 or higher.

Bilingual professional experience that required daily interaction in primary and secondary languages.

Degrees of equivalent level attained outside of the U.S. can be used to meet the educational requirement.
