ASL Interpreter Residency - Hearing

Job Description

Position Summary

The ASL interpreter residency program is designed to provide medical interpreting experience and develop overall interpreting competencies for newly licensed interpreters under the supervision of an RID certified ASL interpreter. Participants will participate in regular mentorship and education that will focus on the skills needed for RID credentialing. During the residency, participants will learn medical terminology, procedures, how to debrief ethically, how to relay pertinent assignment-related information and HIPAA. Other areas of development included in the ASL interpreter residency program are emotional intelligence skills, hospitality, the use of technology, Electronic Medical Record, presentation/education skills, and administrative skills.

The residency program is a 2-year commitment. Year 1 will focus primarily on clinic appointments and outpatient therapies. Year 2 will transition participants to surgery, inpatient, and emergency care while also providing clinic support. Year 2 residents will also share the responsibility of be on-call and responding to overnight needs.

Responsibilities

Interpreting - Provide complete, timely and accurate interpreting from ASL into spoken English for patients, families, team members and providers. Identify and gather healthcare and background information or resources relevant to each encounter.

Ethical judgement - Apply discretion, skill and professional judgement to decision making. Adhere to ECU Health's values, the Interpreter Code of Ethics, and the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).

Cultural brokerage - Be a resource to patients, families and team members and a champion for Language Access and Deaf culture/issues within the organization and surrounding communities. Be knowledgeable of relevant sources of information.

Experience champion - Maintain a spirit of hospitality during interaction with patients, families, team members and providers.

Develop competency and knowledge of regulatory and safety requirements, infection control policies, and protocols to reduce/mitigate/prevent exposure and spread of infectious diseases and other disease processes. Must complete training for proper PPE use, safety, gowning, HIPAA, etc.

Assist with mentoring and guiding interpreter interns, volunteers and shadowing programs.

Assist with device management, basic troubleshooting and locating interpreter technology.

Identify and report safety issues related to communication/language and enter them into Safety Intelligence system.

Provide interdepartmental education on interpreting services, Deaf/Hard of Hearing needs and culture, and proper use of interpreting services.

Participate in recruitment process for future residents.

Serve as a preceptor for new interpreter residents and interns.

Assist with scheduling, setting up EPIC secure chat and carrying the on-call phone.

Triage, assess, and respond to on-call needs to ensure communication needs are met.

Assist with language consults throughout the healthcare system by providing insight on best communication strategies and resources.

Provide support as needed for data collection, analysis, and distribution for the Language Access Services department.

Lead ASL residency education sessions providing opportunities for peers and leaders to learn from one another.

Partner with various departments within ECU Health to facilitate outcomes that impact the Deaf/Hard of Hearing population.

Participate and represent ECU Health's Language Access Services in local and regional conferences as needed.

Minimum Requirements

North Carolina Interpreters and Transliterators Licensing Board (NCITLB) Licensure required upon start date.

Associate degree or higher required.

Travel is required.

Periodic on-call rotation required.

This position is for a hearing ASL interpreter .
