Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, within the Division of Academic Affairs, is the largest college at East Carolina University and serves as a central academic home for teaching, research, creative activity, and student success across the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, and interdisciplinary fields. The college provides a broad-based education that prepares students to think critically, communicate effectively, engage complex problems, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and professions.

The college houses 15 academic departments and offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including several college-level and interdisciplinary programs that operate across traditional departmental boundaries. Thomas Harriot College also provides the majority of ECU’s general education courses, serving students from every college across the university. Through its departments, programs, centers, and auxiliary operations, the college supports academic excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, research and discovery, and high-impact learning opportunities that advance ECU’s mission.
