Utility Operator

The Utility Operator is responsible for safely operating and maintaining Dyneema’s utility equipment in the most cost-effective manner while maintaining safety. This position requires interaction with technicians and supervision within all of the production divisions as well the plant services’ process engineers and maintenance personnel. This position monitors and controls the equipment processes for decalin recovery via the DCS and other site utility systems.
Essential Functions
- Ensure all work is conducted in a safe and effective manner and all applicable procedures and policies are followed. Maintain or enhance safety awareness programs and related documentation. Take action to correct unsafe acts, systems and procedures.
- Abides by Avient Protective Materials procedures/policies regarding security, inclusive of: employee security agreements; use of non-disclosure agreements with outside parties; control of Avient Protective Materials intellectual property limited to a “need to know” only basis; no unauthorized use of cell phones, cameras, computers or Avient Protective Materials property; reporting security threats and incidents; proper control of Avient Protective Materials property and keys.
- Monitors, controls, and manages the production support equipment and utilities processes by means of physical inspection in the field and using the control room DCS System (and other control systems) to keep key operating parameters within Operating Window while complying with safety, environmental and quality requirements.
- Monitors and operates a distillation column system as well as monitors utilities, security, environmental equipment, safety, and other items pertinent to Fiber Production via the Distributive Control System (DCS) and other site monitoring systems, such as Fiber and Life Protection BMSs.
- Proficient in the start-up/shutdown of all equipment and the automated batch program.
- Solving and documenting routine and non-routine problems relating to site utilities that support process, quality, and SHE equipment.
- Is familiar with and supports compliance with relevant laws, regulatory requirements, SOP’s, and SHE requirements.
- Highlights the need for maintenance support based on equipment performance or reliability by creating notifications in SAP, performing general maintenance as trained and assigned.
- Coordinates the shutdown of utility equipment based on instruction or observation and in consultation with the process specialist, maintenance staff or maintenance/shift supervisor. To facilitate the safe access to plant and equipment for utility maintenance activities.
- Dispatches correct resources when outages occur as well as maintenance when utility equipment alarms are present. Special focus on License to Operate supporting equipment.
- Aids in utility equipment troubleshooting via DCS trending and other PC based programs such as Aspentech or MES and Historian. Must use the Microsoft Excel program to provide information regarding such. Ability to predict potential problems because of using these tools. Participates in RCA as needed.
- Handles urgent and emergency situations and makes immediate adjustments to minimize downtime and prevent incidents. Utilizes good judgment in making critical decisions on product quality, equipment functionality, safety, and other related activities.
- Provides daily feedback to maintenance/shift supervision and staff related to key process parameter performance and raw materials.
- Completes required daily documentation including audit forms, regulatory documentation, and other documentation as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- If trained and knowledgeable, authorized to approve work permits per details included in DYNPRO SHE DYN 026. If so authorized, employee must maintain necessary refresher training to participate in these activities.

Education and Experience
- BS/BA in related technical field with 1 year manufacturing experience; OR AA/AS degree in related technical field with 2 years manufacturing experience; OR high school diploma with 3 years manufacturing experience.
Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures.
Knowledge of changeovers/cleaning/set-up, work instructions.
Knowledge of typical utility system operations associated with fiber manufacturing processes.
Ability to perform mathematical computation; problem solving.
Knowledge of performance standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Completes projects with minimal guidance showing a proactive attitude to design and installations.
- Troubleshoots mechanical devices in operation. Dismantles and examines devices to gain access to and remove defective parts. Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments, repairs or replaces defective parts.
- Troubleshoots and repairs input/output devices using PLC systems.
- Troubleshoots, completes, designs, upgrades and installs electrical equipment, circuits and systems.
- Troubleshoots, repairs/replace electrical components at the component level.
- Sets up and operates shop machinery such as lathe, drill press, grinders, band saws, cutting torch, welder. etc. Uses hand tools and pneumatic tools to modify or repair parts and equipment.
- Installs new or repairs/modify hydraulic and pneumatic equipment as needed.
- Improves reliability and uptime of all equipment. Takes a proactive approach to equipment issues with a preventive maintenance mentality.
- Operates the cooling water and waste water system in compliance with EPA regulations.
- Operates forklift and hydraulic working platform as needed.
- Researches supplies, parts and machines needed to complete work orders.
- Assists in organizing and maintaining an accurate inventory of parts.
- Performs and documents work orders and preventative maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Documents work completed. Contributes to upkeep and updating of required paperwork such as records, maintenance logs, documents, manuals, drawings, PM logs, etc.
- Supports the vision, mission and guiding principles of the company.
- Follows applicable ISO, Safety, Health and Environmental rules and guidelines while performing any procedure.
- Maintains departmental housekeeping standards.
- As needed, covers for Maintenance Supervisor when Supervisor is not present.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Requires the use of safety equipment as dictated by the work area such as safety glasses and shoes, dust mask, hard hat, respirator, face shield, hearing protection, chemical suit, gloves, aprons, etc.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with the exception of high noise areas. Proper safety personnel equipment needs to be used while performing this job and that equipment is dictated by the plant Safety guidelines.
- Occasionally works in heights exceeding 30 feet.
